Setup Steps: How-to guide
Step 1: Verify Administrator Permissions
Please ensure you have the necessary administrative permissions within Microsoft Teams:
- Access to Microsoft Teams
- Permission to install and manage apps within Teams
- Ability to authenticate within Teams using organizational credentials
Step 2: Configure Your Microsoft Tenant ID in BetterUp (new)
Before your employees can access BetterUp through Teams, your organization's Microsoft tenant ID must be configured in the BetterUp platform by an admin. Partner admins can configure this themselves directly.
First-time setup:
- In the BetterUp Partner app, go to Settings → Integrations.
- Locate the Microsoft Teams card (it appears alongside Slack, Workday, Degreed, and Peakon).
- Click Configure integration.
- In the modal that opens, enter your Microsoft Tenant ID — a GUID that identifies your organization's Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) tenant. You can find this in the Azure portal under Properties for your Microsoft Entra tenant.
- Click Save tenant ID. You'll see a confirmation: "Microsoft Teams configuration saved."
Step 3: Updating an existing configuration:
- Return to Settings → Integrations and open the Microsoft Teams card.
- Click to open the modal — your current tenant ID will be pre-filled.
- Update the value and click Save changes. You'll see: "Microsoft Teams tenant ID updated."
Don't see the Microsoft Teams card? It's available for organizations with partner integration settings enabled. Contact BetterUp support if it's not visible in your Integrations tab.
Step 4: Enable and Configure the BetterUp App
A Teams administrator must allow the BetterUp app in the Microsoft Teams admin center so members can find it in the Teams app store. The video walkthrough below shows each step.
Allow the app
- Sign in to the Microsoft Teams admin center with your Teams administrator account.
- In the left navigation, select Teams apps, and then select Manage apps.
- In the Search by name box, enter BetterUp.
- Partners hosted on our EEA instance (app.betterup.eu) should use the BetterUp EU app, regardless of their employees' physical location.
- In the results, select BetterUp to open the app's details page. Make sure the publisher is BetterUp.
- Under Status, switch the toggle from Blocked to Allowed. A message confirms that the app status was changed.
Grant admin consent
Admin consent approves the app's permissions once for your whole organization, so members aren't asked to review them.
- On the app details page, select the Permissions tab.
- Under Required permissions, select Grant admin consent. A Microsoft sign-in window opens.
- Select your administrator account, or sign in with it.
- On the Permissions requested screen, review the permissions, and then select Accept.
- When the window closes, check that the Permissions tab shows that admin consent was granted for all required permissions.
Step 5: Pre-install & Pin BetterUp App (Highly Recommended)
While technically optional, we strongly recommend completing this step for best results. Pre-installing and pinning the BetterUp app significantly increases member discoverability and adoption.
When you complete this step, members will find the app waiting in their left panel without having to search for it. Providing easy access makes them far more likely to engage with their coaching benefit right away. A few minutes now can meaningfully improve program outcomes over time.
Pinning the app through a setup policy also installs it for everyone assigned to that policy.
- In the left navigation of the Teams admin center, select Teams apps, and then select Setup policies.
- On the Manage policies tab, select the policy you want to update. To pin the app for everyone who isn't assigned to another policy, select Global (Org-wide default).
- Under Pinned apps, select Add apps.
- In the Add pinned apps panel, enter BetterUp in the search box.
- Point to the BetterUp app in the results, and then select Select. The app appears under Apps to add.
- Select Add. BetterUp appears at the bottom of the pinned apps list.
- (Optional) To change where BetterUp appears in members' app bar, select it in the list, and then select Move up or Move down.
- Select Save.
- If you edited the Global (Org-wide default) policy, a message explains that the change affects your whole organization. Select Confirm. A success message confirms that the policy was updated. It can take up to one hour for the pinned app to appear for members.
Step 6: Verify Member Experiences Function as Expected
Before completing this step, confirm that your Microsoft Tenant ID has been configured in the BetterUp Partner app (Step 2). Members will not be able to sign in until that configuration is in place (even if the Teams app is fully enabled and pinned).
Once all required steps listed above are complete, please allow up to one hour for changes to take effect. Members will now be able to search and download the BetterUp app from the Teams app store, or launch the pinned app directly from the left panel (if you completed Step 5).
When using the BetterUp app for the first time, members will need to sign in with their organizational credentials. You can refer to this Member Support Article for more details

FAQs
Which specific Graph API permissions are required for the MS Teams integration?
We request the fewest possible GraphAPI permissions just to get the user's name and email. The specific scopes are: email, openid, profile, User.Read
What happens when a member no longer has a BetterUp license? Do we deprovision them? Does the app go away?
Members can still see or add the BetterUp app in Teams even after their license expires. When they open the app, they will see a clear message indicating they no longer have an active account. R&D has designed this experience to be straightforward and non-frustrating for members.
There is no automated way for BetterUp to remove the app from an individual's Teams instance. However, a Teams administrator has the ability to push or remove apps from employees' instances. Because member access can change frequently, most organizations have their IT admin approve the BetterUp app to appear in the org's Teams App Store rather than pushing it to everyone directly — meaning members can self-install if and when they want to engage.
If your organization wants tighter control over who sees the app after license expiration, we recommend working with your Teams administrator to align app availability with your active BetterUp license roster.
What will members see if they don't have access to AI Coach?
If a member's organization has not enabled AI coaching, they will see a message in the BetterUp Teams app indicating that AI features are turned off for their organization. They can still access other BetterUp features through Teams, including session reminders, coach messages, and session management, depending on their product experience. Members should reach out to their internal program administrator for more information about AI Coach access.
What if members see a message that their organization isn't configured?
This means your organization's Microsoft Tenant ID hasn't been set up in the BetterUp Partner app yet, or it was entered incorrectly. Follow the steps in Step 2 above to configure or update your tenant ID. Once saved, members can retry signing in without any additional steps on their end.
If you've already completed Step 2 and members are still seeing this message, contact BetterUp support.
