How To Select A Coach During Onboarding
Before your initial session, rest assured your BetterUp Coach is ready to support you in achieving both your personal and professional aspirations, from establishing improved habits to attaining your goals. Discussions in your sessions are confidential and can cover topics that you find relevant. The first session is a great opportunity to build rapport with your coach, understand the coaching process, and discuss how it can facilitate your progress towards your objectives. In subsequent sessions, your coach serves as an ally, prompting inquiries that foster your growth and success.
Coach Selection Process Post-Onboarding:
- Log into BetterUp
- Identify your focus areas
- Complete the self-assessment
- This includes specifying your timezone, preferred coaching language, and answering questions about your desired coaching style.
Choosing Your Coach:
- From your personalized coach recommendations, select a BetterUp Coach and click "Schedule with [Coach Name]"
- Choose a convenient day and time from the options available
- Apply additional filters, if applicable
Finalizing Your Session:
- Confirm your appointment
How To Select A Coach Post-Onboarding
To choose a BetterUp Coach post-onboarding, please complete the following steps on a web browser:
- Log into BetterUp.
- Click on the 'Discover' or 'Coaching' tab, depending on your program
- Select Personal Coaching
- Choose the type of coach you need (e.g., Dedicated Coach, Specialist Coach) from the available offerings
- Click Find a coach > for an overview of how your chosen coach type will support your journey
Scheduling with your chosen coach:
- Click Schedule with [Coach's Name]
- Pick a day and time from the bolded available options and listed session times
- Confirm your selection

To find more coach matches beyond the initial recommendations: On a web browser:
- Select Explore more coach matches
- For more specific needs, click I am looking for something more specific
- A pop-up will appear on the right, allowing you to choose language and time preferences. Check the relevant boxes.
- Click Apply changes for tailored recommendations.
- If needed, click Explore matches for further assistance.
- Provide feedback on your needs and preferences.
- Please Note: Certain requests, like spirituality, sexual orientation, and specific work experiences, may be challenging to accommodate.
- Our Customer Support team will review your feedback, prepare a new list of coach options, and contact you with next steps.
For optimal experience: If you encounter issues selecting a coach on the mobile app, try using a desktop or a web browser on your mobile device. This enables better access to review and select a coach. Afterwards, you can use the mobile app for full access to BetterUp.
Changing Your Coach
To ensure a fulfilling coaching experience at BetterUp, follow these steps if you wish to change your coach:
If using a web browser:
- Navigate to the Coaching section on your homepage
- Click on your current coach's profile
- Select Try another coach (located at the bottom left of the screen)
- Click Select my Coach then Start to review new coach profiles
- Choose the coach that best aligns with you
- Please Note: You can work with only one Primary/Personal Coach at a time. Changing coaches in specific categories (like Sleep or Nutrition) ends your current coaching engagement in that category.
If you are on the BetterUp mobile app:
- Click on the three dots (...), and select Try another Coach
Coach Availability
If a BetterUp Coach that you would like to connect with does not have availability that matches your preferences, we encourage you to find a time that does work for you on their schedule and to schedule a session. Once you have done that, you will be able to send your new coach a message and see if they are able to accommodate a session on a date/time that may not be listed on their schedule.
If you and your coach are not a fit based on schedule differences, please view the "Exploring More Coach Options" section within this article to curate additional recommendations based on your "time of the day" scheduling preferences.
Reconnecting With a Previous Coach
We are happy to hear that you had a great experience with your past coach! If your previous coach has open capacity in their roster, they will show as an "available" option with your BetterUp platform.
If you would like to be reconnected with an available previous primary/personal coach or previous available extended network coach, please follow the steps below:
- Log in to BetterUp and scroll down to the “Coaching” section
- Click Explore coaching >
- Scroll down to Meet with a previous coach to view your prior coach(es)
- Coach(es) can be listed as "Available today", "Available from next week", or "This coach is not available anymore"
- If the coach is listed as "Available today":
- Click View coach >
- Click Schedule to view their availability and schedule your next session
- Click View coach >
- If your coach shows, "Available from next week":
- Click View coach >
- Click Schedule to view their availability and schedule your next session
- If your coach shows, "This coach is not available anymore":
- Click Find a new coach > to see more coach options
Please note that if you are currently matched to a primary (personal) coach, you will have the option to click Stop working with [Your Coach's Name]. You can only work with one primary coach at a time. This means that choosing a new coach will end your engagement with your current coach so that you can schedule with your previous coach.
