Members can add and upload documents to their BetterUp AI Coaching sessions, making it easy to provide additional context and information to talk through with their AI Coach and enhance each session.
Upload documents in one click, like meeting notes, a project briefing, performance reviews, survey results, and more. Anything uploaded stays available for the rest of that conversation, retaining and referencing the added context as the session progresses.
Please note that documentation upload into the AI Coach may not be available for all organizations.
How to Add a New Document
- Once logged into BetterUp, click the AI Coaching tab on the top navigation bar.
- Select the paper clip attachment icon below to the chat box and choose the document you want to add from your computer.
- Once your document is attached, start a chat with your AI Coach by sharing a question or additional context on your document, and continue your coaching conversation from there.
Supported Files and Size Limits
Supported file types are PDF, Word (DOC, DOCX), Excel (XLS, XLSX), CSV, plain text (TXT, MD), and HTML.
Images, PPT/PPTX decks, and audio or video files aren't supported yet. To help accommodate these formats, please convert your file to PDF format if applicable.
Each file can be up to 4.7 MB, and you can upload up to 20 MB of documents in a single conversation. If either limit is exceeded, you’ll receive an error message. Some tips for reducing file size are saving the document as a PDF, or uploading only the specific section or content you wish to cover if working with a larger document.
Example Use Cases
- Making sense of feedback. Upload a performance review or 360 report and ask what themes come up more than once, or how to prepare for the follow-up conversation with your manager.
- Turning a plan into next steps. Upload your development plan or goals document and ask which goals to focus on this quarter, or how to make vague ones specific and measurable.
- Leading a team. Upload team engagement or survey results and ask where your team is struggling most, or how to open a meeting about the results without putting people on the defensive.
- Preparing for a hard conversation. Upload a job description, meeting notes, or a draft you are working from, and rehearse — where your gaps are before an interview, or how to deliver a difficult message so it lands as supportive.
Privacy & Consent with AI Features
- Your AI Coach conversation is private. BetterUp does not share individual coaching content, including uploaded documents, with your employer. Only aggregated, anonymized insights (topics trending, usage, etc.) are visible to admins.
- Uploaded documents are deleted once the conversation ends, and are only used in that coaching session.
- Member data is stored on secure AWS servers (US or Germany), encrypted in transit and at rest. Access is tightly controlled.
- The AI Coach uses guardrails for sensitive topics. It may redirect you to appropriate resources if something is beyond the coaching scope.
- BetterUp does not use member data to train foundational AI models. The AI Coach is built upon large language models, but BetterUp layers on its own science-backed knowledge rather than using your data as training material.
- Use your judgment about what you share, the same way you would in any coaching conversation. If a document contains information about other people, or details you would rather not discuss, remove those parts first or upload only the section you want to work on.
